Riverclan History .
The rich history of Riverclan begins with Hail, a noble grey tom, the first leader of the clan. He reigned for many moons, a powerful and respected male with a love for the water, and his clanmates shared that very same passion. Nearing the end of his reign, Hailstar appointed a young and ambitious tom as his deputy, Bleakfang. While young, Bleakfang was notable for his skills and charisma, able to easily change the minds of anyone he spoke to, a politician with a tongue for manipulation, known by many even outside the Riverclan borders. It was known that Hailstar could not live forever, and when he did eventually die, his last life slipping away from him out of old age, Bleakfang took his place as leader, receiving the name Bleakstar and establishing his leadership with an iron claw. He stood as Riverclan leader for several moons, appointing a young she-cat, Ivyfang, as his deputy. Ivyfang was a somewhat aggressive she-cat, but had a passion for Riverclan and everything it had.
The death of a she-cat by the name of Rainmist raised many questions within the clan. Her death was not something usual; it was not the result of illness, or even battle, it was murder. It took time to discern what had happened, but the truth eventually came out, Bleakstar was the one responsible for her death. The clan quickly turned, driving Bleakstar from the territory and banishing him from the clan, and Ivyfang took her rightful place as leader of Riverclan. She appointed her old friend, Russetclaw, as her second-in-command. As Ivystar lead her clan, affairs with Thunderclan became tense, the two leaders, Sunningrocks sat under the control of Squirrelstar, and Ivystar wasn’t going to allow that for long. Only several moons after becoming leader, Ivystar lead a patrol, overpowering the Thunderclan forces and once again placing Sunningrocks under Riverclans control.
Less than a moon after retaking Sunningrocks, a flood washed away Riverclan camp and the storm damaged the other territories as well. Many cats were saved, but several were washed away by the strong flood waters, it had been a long time since Riverclan had experienced a flood, and while they had been working on the dens, they were not fully equipped to withstand the flood. In order to escape the flooding, Ivystar lead her wet, battered clan away from their old camp and set up a temporary one where they would stay while the flood waters receded. Unfortunately, two of the cats washed away were the Medicine Cat and his apprentice. The body of the young apprentice was found, her body tangled in the branches of a fallen tree, but not too badly damaged. They were not able to find the full Medicine Cat however. In a moon Riverclan was able to return to their camp, having found the floodwaters receded enough to feel safe and comfortable in the new dens they built from both scratch and from what remained of the dens they were able to drag back.
One day, after many moons of peace, Ivystar disappeared. The clan wasn’t sure what to do, they had no proof that she was dead and had no idea where she had gone to. Russetclaw tried to take care of the clan, but was reluctant to officialy take responsibility of them, too unsure of Ivystar’s whereabouts. Trouble was beginning to brew, they had no Medicine Cat as Lighteningpaw resigned from his position, unable to handle the pressures, and a mysterious she-cat came to the camp, promising the clan glory anf power. In the end, she left, bitter for revenge, and she would soon get it.
Salem came in the dead of night, hidden by the rain and overtook Riverclan. Her followers killed without mercy and even ate young kits as they dragged them from their mother in front of Russetclaw. Unable to watch his clanmates die, knowing they had no chance of winning, he called for his warriors to surrender. Even with the aid of a loner, Pale, the clan cats couldn’t win. They all sat, prisoners in their own home for almost a moon before word of aid reached them, Lionstar and her Windclan warriors were coming to fight with them.
With help from Windclan, Riverclan retook their territory and their camp, wounded but liberated. Much time was spent rebuilding the camp, and Russetclaw accepted his place as leader, making the loner Pale, a large help in retaking Riverclan, his deputy, giving her the name Palesmoke. He also named Hickoryfoot medicine cat. That night he left for the moonstone where he became Russetstar. Riverclan rebuilt and healed their wounds, many with battle scars forever engrained in their pelts. All was well until the sickness hit, many cats falling due to starvation, unable to absorb nutrients from their foods no matter how much they ate, Hickoryfoot included. Luckily, the illness has been brought under control and few remain plagued.
