"mama! mama!" a young, white she-cat scampered towards the seal-pointed female. she tripped, nose-diving into a pile of raked elm leaves. chuckling, the older she-cat curled her thin tail over her paws, gazing down at her youngest daughter endearingly.
"pale," she meowed authoritatively, but not without a slight chuckle, "i told you to be careful. mrs. lionel just finished collecting those leaves. she may want them for something, and now look what you've done?"
pale sat up, a stray leaf resting between her ears much like a small hat. her mother padded closer, clasping the stem between her teeth and lifted the elm leaf off her smallest daughter's head. pale giggled, rearing up on her hind legs as she pressed her paws against her mother's shoulder. she reached up, barely grasping the she-cats ear in her teeth. "grr!" pale squealed, trying to pull at her mother playfully, head twisting side to side as if shaking a small piece of prey. "mama! let's play!"
and rain would have, had it not been for the sharp pine-scent ebbing closer and closer to the two cats. she stiffened, whacking pale with a semi-clawed paw. the white kitten tumbled to the ground, blood seeping from a small gash on her shoulder. "mama?"
out from the shadows of the forest's edge emerged two, large tabbies, one silver and one brown. the brown cat's eyes were a menacing shade of ugly yellow, ear shredded completely, leaving nothing but a flicking stump. opposite of him stood the silver cat with harrowing green eyes and deep claw scars across his cheek. they glared at the two cats. "what are you doing on thunderclan land, kittypets?"
rain's ears flew back, hackles raised as she tried to block her daughter. "we're not kittypets! we are simple travelers who stopped here for a rest. leave us be."
slowly, the two toms began to encircle rain and pale, surrounding them like two hawks eyeing a fearful mouse. "well, then. what are you doing in the twolegsplace then, not-kittypets?" asked the brown tom, obviously the ringleader of the two.
rain lowered her stance, trying her hardest to protect pale with a stiff, black tail. "i've recently kitted," she tried to explain. "when my daughter is old enough we will go, but this land belongs to no cat."
the two toms laughed maniacally, their crooked, chipped teeth shining in the setting sun. "well, well, ashpelt," sneered the brown tom to his cohort, "we have two pretty little queens here, don't we?"
ashpelt nodded, ther circle starting to close in on the two females. "we do, blackstripe. in fact, i was reminded just the other day that i need to take a mate... but now that we're here..." he licked his lips, gazing at little pale like a delicious, fat mouse left in the fresh-kill pile.
pale didn't like the way ashpelt was staring at her. she hid deeper behind her mother, beginning to tremble. "well," commented blackstripe, "there's two of them. one for each of us. what do you say?"
with a snort, ashpelt looked down at the she-cats, his gaze filled with disgust. "bramblestar wouldn't be very happy if he heard we'd impregnated two loners. then again... does he have to know?"
"you read my mind, brother." all at once blackstripe lunged at rain. the siamese she-cat hissed and reared up, swiping at the thunderclan tom with a small, clawed paw. ashpelt flanked the two, racing at pale. terrified, the small, white kit could do nothing but freeze, staring at her aggressor with wide blue eyes.
"NO!" lunging at ashpelt, rain successfully knocked him to the ground, but not before ashpelt lept onto her back, his fangs sinking into the scruff of her neck. with a yowl, he tried to pin her to the ground, all four feet on either side of her as he forced his bodyweight on top of rain. the she-cat screamed, bucking wildly, but she could not throw the massive, thunderclan warrior off her.
exhausted, the she-cat went limp under ashpelt, but not before screaming to pale, "RUN!"
blackstripe lunged at pale, but she managed to back-kick him in the face, catching his eye with her tiny back claws. the mighty tom gave a scream, blood rushing down his face from his slashed eyeball. like a rabbit on the moor she took off into the dense foliage, running with all her might, her mother's screams of pain filling her ears as they died with every heavy step she took.
pale ran, and ran, and ran, until she could run no more. she collapsed onto the murky bogland nearly three miles from their home by the twoleg nests, faint from exhaustion.
mama... mama!
